Mazo de Mon

2022-04-15

Both hikes start from our cabin at Mazo del Mon and follow in-and-out tracks, yet the scenery feels completely different in each direction.

The first trail leads gently toward the stone village of Pesoz, slipping under a canopy of ancient chestnut and oak trees. The forest feels almost primeval — moss thick on the trunks, the air heavy with the scent of wet leaves and earth. Between the branches, you catch the soft murmur of the Río Agüeira, winding through ferns and fallen branches. Every bend holds a small discovery: a wooden bridge, an old mill half lost to time, or a ray of light piercing through the deep green.

The second trail climbs the opposite way, up the mountain through groves and meadows toward a nearly abandoned hamlet and the Palacio del Mon. The higher you go, the wider the view — rolling ridges, misty valleys, and forests stretching endlessly across the horizon. Even though both routes follow the same tracks back, the return feels new each time — light shifts, colors change, and the forest reveals another side of its quiet beauty.
