Saint Christophe

Somewhere between Limoges and Clermont-Ferrand lies a tiny hamlet called Saint-Christophe.
Five houses, two hundred sheep, seven shepherd dogs, one brave cat — and if you’re very lucky, you might meet a local resident. Beyond that, there are meadows, hills, and above all, endless stretches of untouched forest to walk through. That’s what we came for: a pure nature experience that started right from our doorstep. A bit of a wild gamble, since the region isn’t exactly known as a tourist hotspot — but for us, that was a bonus. We like being around people, but only when we choose to. 🙂
We’ve truly been spoiled by this place. I think we walked about 60 kilometers in total, always starting right from our chalet. During all those kilometers through the woods, we didn’t meet a single person — not one! What we did encounter were deer, roe deer, badgers, and other wildlife. Absolutely beautiful to see. We always set out around 7 a.m., which doubled our chances of spotting wild animals. The other reason for our early starts was that by the time we returned, we could still do something fun with the kids — usually just as they were rolling out of bed. 😀 The perfect balance.
Back from the teenagers to the forests. I’ve wandered through many forests in my life — in Germany, Sweden, Finland, the Ardennes, the Netherlands — but nowhere have I seen forests as dense, pristine, and untouched as here. Old woodland trails crisscross everywhere, and every path leads you to another beautiful patch of forest. Sometimes the woods open up briefly into a meadow or a tiny, charming hamlet with just a few houses — but just as quickly, you’re back among the trees again.
The download contains 3 of our favorite walks. We did plenty more but this wil get you started!
