Maredret

Maredret is a picturesque village in the province of Namur, in the heart of Wallonia, Belgium. Surrounded by wooded hills and the peaceful Molignée Valley, it’s known for its Benedictine Abbey of St. Benedict, where nuns still practice traditional crafts such as illumination and calligraphy. The village features charming stone houses, narrow lanes, and a tranquil, almost timeless atmosphere. Maredret is a perfect starting point for scenic walks and cycling routes that explore the beautiful Molignée region and its neighboring village of Maredsous, famous for its abbey and beer. We were staying in Maredret with the whole family — fourteen of us in total — a big, joyful getaway filled with long meals, laughter, and walks through the woods.

Le Pain en Soi is more than just a bakery — it’s a small sanctuary of craft, warmth, and authenticity. Every loaf feels alive here: hand-shaped, slowly fermented, and baked with real attention to detail. The aroma of fresh bread fills the old stone house, mingling with the sound of the countryside. The owner is passionate and kind — the kind of person who remembers your face and speaks about bread like it’s poetry. Everything is made with organic ingredients and an almost meditative respect for time and process. It’s the kind of place where you buy one loaf… and end up staying for a coffee and a long conversation.
