Family weekend in Condroz

We spent a family weekend in Ossogne, a small village tucked away in the Belgian Condroz. It’s one of those places where life slows down — old stone farmhouses, narrow winding roads, and the kind of silence you only get between hills, forests, and open fields.
We stayed at Gite La petite école, a beautifully restored old school building that immediately feels welcoming. The place has that honest character — thick stone walls, wooden beams, and a calm setting surrounded by fields and forest edges. It’s simple in the best way: bright, practical, and full of small details that make it cosy without being cluttered. It’s the kind of place where you can make breakfast slowly, open the door to nothing but fresh air, and plan a walk straight from the front step. A great base for exploring the area, and even better for just unwinding as a family.
Ferme Vrancken, the family farm right next to our Gite is also teh owner of La petite école. They grow simple, seasonal vegetables and keep a 24/7 vending machine with fresh produce. It’s practical, no fuss, and exactly what you expect from a local farm. We even picked up our parts evening dinner there — fresh pumpkins, butter, home made ice cream and a few extras. Easy, tatefull & close by!
Several hiking routes start right from the village. We followed one of them, and they were exactly what we needed: easy paths, fresh air, and that typical Ardennes mix of forests, small streams, and open views. No big plans — just walking together, taking our time, and enjoying being outside. Just a short walk from Ossogne you’ll find Saint Fontaine, a tiny hamlet that’s worth the detour. It feels almost hidden in the landscape a few old houses, a chapel, and a peaceful valley setting that makes it perfect for slowing down. It’s an easy walk and a beautiful spot to take a break, sit down for a small picnic, or just enjoy the quiet surroundings
Ossogne is simple and quiet, but that’s exactly the charm. A small place where you can unplug, breathe, and just enjoy a slow weekend with the family. Perfect in its simplicity.
